What is the Tabernacle of Moses, and why is it such an important area of study? The Tabernacle is actually the original and smaller version of what is commonly known as the Temple of Solomon, both of which were God ordained places of worship utilized in the Old Testament.
It’s Very Important!
The Tabernacle is a really important topic of study for several good reasons. First of all, it is absolutely loaded with profound spiritual insights. I would even venture to say that it is most likely the most concentrated compilation of spiritual insights in the Bible. And it is a spiritual blueprint which lays out all that God has purposed for the lives of His people.
Secondly, it is a virtual master key to unlocking the Holy Scriptures. A really good exposition on the Tabernacle can endow you with a much greater level of scriptural understanding. This is because it actually has connections to many other places in the Scriptures – from Genesis to Revelation.
Another reason for studying the Tabernacle is that it reveals the very heart of God. In fact, one of the Hebrew words from which the English word tabernacle is translated is very interesting. The Hebrew word for tabernacle is ohel (o-hel) which means; dwelling place, or home. However, this word, when written in the Hebrew handwriting, forms a hieroglyphic word picture which means: God revealed. In other words, the Hebrew word ohel tells us that the Tabernacle is God revealed. And the Tabernacle of Moses does, indeed, contain the revelation of God.
An additional benefit of the Tabernacle is that it very effectively identifies the true Jewish Messiah – Jesus Christ. There are numerous Jews out there who are still awaiting the promised Messiah. After all, Moses himself said “The LORD thy God will raise up unto you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like unto me; unto him you shall hearken (listen).” Many Jews are basing their expectations of the promised Messiah upon these words (Muslims believe this statement to be in reference to the Prophet Mohammed).
A Human Body in Disguise!
They are still looking for the Messiah, but in order to find what they seek, they need only take a closer look at all that God orchestrated concerning the Tabernacle, which was built by Moses, who again said that God would raise up another Prophet like unto himself. The Tabernacle was a major part of his ministry and was central to it.
Therefore, his statement also included the Tabernacle, which is actually a human body in disguise. But more specifically, it was the Messiah in disguise. Moses made the Tabernacle, but the Messiah would actually be the Tabernacle. In this way (and in numerous other similar ways), this Prophet would actually be like unto Moses. But, all that Moses did physically, the Messiah would fulfill both physically and spiritually in Himself. And the Tabernacle makes all of this abundantly clear as it leaves no doubt to the identity of the promised Messiah.
The Tabernacle also serves as powerful evidence of God’s existence. One of the most googled searches on the internet is the question “Is God real?” The number of inquiries for this question is off the charts. This demonstrates that there are many people out there who are looking for solid answers about the reality of God. And the Tabernacle is just what the doctor ordered, because it is much too cleverly constructed and contains far too many cunningly concealed elements (all of which tie directly into all that is written in the Bible) to have originated in the mind of man.
God’s Way of Communicating Secrets!
In actuality, the Tabernacle is a major means by which God reveals deep and profound mysteries about all that has happened and is happening in both the natural and spiritual realms. Just imagine that you were trying to teach a colony of ants all about yourself (your standards, your attributes, your intelligence, etc.). How would you do that?
You would have to devise a way of placing a representation of yourself (and all that you are) within the midst of the ant colony. And you would have to do it in a way that they could understand. This is what God has done with the Tabernacle (and then later through Jesus Christ who perfectly fulfills the Tabernacle). The majesty and knowledge of God is far above us, even as we are far above ants. As such, the Tabernacle is the means by which God has enabled us to know and understand Him on a level that otherwise would not be possible. At the same time and for the same reasons, its cleverly designed symbolisms (which were hidden in plain sight) serve as powerful evidence of His existence.
Proverbs chapter 25, verse 2 says “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.” Indeed, a tremendous amount of information has been concealed within the Tabernacle (much more, in fact, than is commonly realized), and the goal of this teaching series is to search out the matter to the end that you might be enlightened and that God may be glorified.
